Merlin
STAR #178

By chance yesterday I stopped into Harris County Animal Control to evaluate a Lab they had there (to be a potential drug dog), and since they didn't have any Aussies listed on their website I figured I was safe as far as that went :-)   Wrong!   Of course the shelter personnel knows me so without even asking what I was there for they took me right back to the kennels to get the Aussie. Huh?!? Wait a minute, I was here to look a Lab, I didn't even know you had an Aussie?!?  Well, sure enough they had a red merle male that had been found as stray a few days ago, so in a weak moment of feeling sorry for the poor guy I took him <sigh>.  This was one of those 'really' bad weak moments that I normally only reserve for puppies, at Christmas time (I always seem to bail one out as Christmas time for some reason!), and when I have had a rescue die or had to have put to sleep.  This guy really  lucked out because he ain't a puppy, it ain't Christmas, but unfortunately we had to have one of our rescues euthanized recently and it was like he was just calling to me to help him (the one we PTS was a red merle male also).

This  poor, old boy, who we named Merlin, is soooooo matted down to the skin and grungy I just had to take a 'before', ugly duckling picture of him.  He looks to be a well bred, possibly from Las Rocossa lines from his coat and body type, Aussie boy and is as sweet as can be!  He had a nasty old collar on, with two chewed off ropes attached to it (like he's been tied up with his entire life), that was so gross it was almost bad enough I had to burn it rather than throw it away - yuk!  I spent a little over 3  hours grooming the mats out of him, trimming his 3/4" long nails, plus bathing out a TON of ticks and fleas - good grief!    Today, we spent 2.5 hours at the vet with him and found out that it would have been easier to list what *wasn't* wrong with him rather than what is :-(   He's high heartworm positive and has hook/whip works (big surprise! :-), is severely anemic from the fleas/ticks, has a bacterial infection around his eyes/muzzle, has ear mites and a ear yeast infection, 4 rotten/broken off front teeth, and has either a bad case of arthritis or hip displasia.   So he's on antibiotics, doxycycline, panacur, droncit, pet tinic, cosequin and etogesic for the next couple of weeks to see if that'll help him get back on track.  We'll have to wait and see about the neutering, teeth cleaning/extraction, heartworm treatment for when he's feeling better, if it's even possible to do these things at his age.

Of course, finding a home for a senior dog is not an easy task but I'm hoping there will be someone out there that would give a good home to an old dog who needs a soft place to lay, good meals, and a lot of love for his remaining years.  After all he's been through in his life, this is least that we can do.  So if anybody knows of a home like this and/or would like to help contribute to his medical and foster care, please let me know!

I'll post his 'after grooming' pictures and updates on this as well as time goes on!

Merlin has now been here a little over a month (wow, does time fly!), and he is doing wonderfully now that he's feeling better.  He finished all of his treatments for the bacterial infection he had, ear mites, worms, erlichia, etc., and is going to be going in soon for his neuter and heartworm treatment.  Keep your fingers crossed that all turns out well!  Merlin has turned out to be quite the character and can act like a pup sometimes with his antics, but still remains a dignified 'older' gentleman who loves his walks through the pasture (giving the horses a piece of his mind just because :-), getting groomed, and giving wonderful kisses.  He is still somewhat sore and wobbly in his back end, either due to arthritis or hip displasia (which Etogesic didn't seem to do much for), so I'd hopefully like to start him on Duramaxx and see if that would help him a little more if someone would like to sponsor that for him.  Merlin is also still looking for a sponsor for his heartworm treatment as well, so if you would like to help this lovely older boy during his foster care,  please let me know! Of course, once all his treatments are done he will be looking for a permanent home to love him through the rest of his years - so if you're interested in possibly adopting Merlin please feel free to contact us!

"A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words.......'

Merlin

Merlin's found his forever home - yea!!!!!   After first meeting us at our rescue booth at the Reliant Hall Dog Show last summer and then reading Merlin's story shortly thereafter, a very special lady  named Debbi Eschenbach, offered to sponsor Merlin's heartworm treatment and also to foster him through the treatment as well as afterwards until he found a permanent home.  Well, guess what - Merlin's found it with her and has got the most wonderful home a spoiled rotten old man could ask for  :-)  Merlin has come a LONG way from the stinky, matted, sickly and broken down spirit he was when we first pulled him out of the shelter he was in and continues to amaze all of us every day  with his antics.   We love you 'ol man and look forward to many, many more years of 'Merlin Stories'.........

From Merlin's new Mom, Debbi Eschenbach (Feb. 2004):

You are never going to believe this!

We were the first ones at the pond and there were a few ducks in the pond.  Merlin started running around the pond - yes, running, trying to chase the ducks.  Of course they were closer to the center of the pond and he couldn't get close to them.  So can you guess what he did?????

Yes, he slid into the pond and swam to the center and back.  I was so nervous, but he started swimming right away.  He had so much fun!!  The ducks flew off and he came back to me to the side of the pond and I pulled him up.  I was ready to jump in there and get him.  I wasn't sure if he'd tire out quickly or not.  The only bad thing was that later in the evening he was pretty sore.  I gave him a good rub down.

He's amazing me every day.  Imagine what he could accomplish on pain medication!

Of course I realize they are moments in time and not every day, but that makes those moments more special.  He sure was a happy happy doggie today!
